Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Plastic Disaster” by Little Cuts from their 7” single on Dirtnap Records.
Plastic Disaster is not what happens when your Barbie Dream Home catches on fire. It’s also not what happens when you max out your credit cards. What it is, is the marriage between melodic pop and fuzzy guitars. That’s something we can throw rice at. It is also the new 7” from Portland’s Dirtnap Records bearing the low-fi recordings of Seattle trio Little Cuts. What? You haven’t heard of Little Cuts? Surprising considering they don’t have a website, a bandcamp page, or a tumblr account. And they haven’t been on their Myspace or Facebook page in a year. But they did put out a record that stands on its own merits, and if you know if bands like The Shins and The Cops, you might recognize a few faces in Little Cuts.
Your best bet for keeping an ear open for these guys is probably their Facebook page. They don’t have any upcoming shows listed, but according to bassist Drew Church they are working on a full length, which is rad. While you’re waiting, you can always go back and listen to their 2009 performance in the KEXP studio here.
