Song of the Day: Deep Sea Diver - You Go Running

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “You Go Running” by Deep Sea Diver from their 2012 self-release History Speaks.

Deep Sea Diver - You Go Running (MP3)

Deep Sea Diver is the collective brain-trust of John Raines, Michael Duggan, Peter Mansen and recent Seattleite implant, frontwoman Jessica Dobson, who in recent years has served as the guitarist for Beck, the bassist for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and most recently, as the guitarist for the Shins.  Suffice it to say, Dobson’s star is shining bright right now. But that wasn’t always the case.  Having already signed to a recording contract with Atlantic Records at the impressionable age of 19, Dobson went on to release two full length solo albums which, unfortunately, never saw the light of day, and she was subsequently dropped from her label.  Undeterred, she took to self-releasing her next EP, 2009′s New Caves, under the moniker Deep Sea Diver.  The success and critical acceptance she got as a result of said EP gave her the resolve to once again release another full length album.  The result is History Speaks and its first single, “You Go Running.”

“You Go Running” comes off sounding like the lovechild of Its Blitz-era Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Little Dragon, albeit with even more attitude and female swagger to spare.  Intricate, funky basslines, incredible drumming by band member Mansen, and a confident, commanding vocal presence by Dobson (also on on guitar) are the big reasons why the song grabs you from the first 10 seconds and engages you until the very end.  A great line, and coincidentally the line that sparked the original song’s inception, “watch your lips pulse to the beat of trouble” stands out and is sure to be echo in your head long after.

The band is embarking on a small U.S. Midwest tour in June to support The Shins (fun fact: Dobson pulls double duty each date, being also the guitarist for The Shins); a list of dates, as well as other Deep Sea River-related content can be found on either their official band website or their Facebook page.  Also, check them Deep Sea Diver playing their single, “You Go Running,” at their February 2012 record release party at Seattle’s Columbia City Theatre:
