Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Wallflower” by The Grizzled Mighty from their self-released, self-titled album.
There has been a serious resurgence of rock bands who, well, rock. And I mean, melt your ears, make you spill your beer as you pump your fist in the air, rock. My Goodness, Reign Wolf, and The Fox and the Law just to name a few. And speaking of TFATL, you might recognize guitarist and face melter Ryan Granger who fronts today’s song of the day band The Grizzled Mighty. He partnered up with drummer Whitney Petty (formerly a guitarist for Deerhunter) to do more than just draw comparisons to The White Stripes and The Black Keys (though those comparisons are surely justified at least to the early versions of both bands). They wanted an outlet to play the down and dirty, super fuzzed out, classic blues rock that was screaming to be released from within each of them. Mission accomplished.
The Grizzled Mighty will be kicking off the monthly KEXP Audioasis benefit show TOMORROW (4/7) at The Sunset with Consignment and Strong Killings. More dates and info available on their Reverbnation page. In the meantime, here they are performing “Miles of Cocaine” at the High Dive earlier this year.
