Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection comes from San Francisco indie rock act Eux Autres. “Ring Out” is the single off of their delightful new 6 track EP Sun Is Sunk on Bons Mots Records.
Eux Autres (French for “them others”) is, at its heart, the brother and sister combo of Heather and Nicholas Larimer. Along with drummer Yoshi Nakamoto, they make cheerful and fun 60s-infused garage rock that you can dance to. The band has been making music since 2003 and have consistently put out great music and thrown a great party of a live show.
“Ring Out” is yet another great tune from Eux Autres and is a pretty definitive example of what they are all about. For starters, the hook is simple and sweet. The vocals on these tracks are the moving parts – everything else is a sugary texture. Even after only two and a half minutes, “Ring Out” will be in your head all day (it’s that catchy). Lyrically, the Larimer’s are heavy on the alliteration. Through various tongue twisters and funny word pairings, “Ring Out” holds the timeless message that when things are looking down, you just need to buck up and realize that everything will turn up eventually. It’s a cheery message for a cheery tune, but “Ring Out” is memorable and unique in ways that evade traditional pop music.
“Ring Out” is a summery pop jam that will find its home on anyone’s summer driving playlist. If you like what you hear, head over to their music page and grab the rest of the fantastic Sun Is Sunk EP. Eux Autres is currently writing and recording their next full length album, but keep checking back to their website for new tour dates in the near future.
