It had to be one of the strangest sessions ever recorded at KEXP, but that’s hardly surprising given the idiosyncratic nature of principle songwriter of The Magnetic Fields, Stephin Merritt. After soundchecking in our studio and then discovering the men’s room’s superior acoustics, Stephin requested a change. And he was right: unusual of a venue as it may be, our bathroom sounds spectacular. So, set on the loo itself, Stephin Merritt proceeded to perform a few songs from the vast repertoire of The Magnetic Fields, including “Your Girlfriend’s Face” from their latest, Love at the Bottom of the Sea, and an appropriate “cover” of Yoko Ono’s “Flush Piece / Unknown”. Where else is he going to do that? Count yourself lucky to be a peeping tom in this intimate session and interview with KEXP’s DJ El Toro... live from the KEXP men’s room!
