Out This Week 5/1

Baltimore band Lower Dens finally release Nootropics this week after much well-deserved hype. While Twin-Hand Movement may have been good, Nootropics sees Lower Dens find their own place in the scene with a rewarding, excellent experience. The krautrock-tinged lead single “Brains” was our KEXP Song of the Day several weeks ago. The track was one continuous build of energy that left you kind of puzzled but altogether satisfied, like an old Neu song. Nootropics is an extension of the oddly enticing energy that “Brains” had begun. Lower Dens is experimental but relaxing trip, and its not hard to find yourself wandering into their territory with the passing of each track. Nootropics is out on CD and 2xLP on Ribbon Music.

J. Tillman’s new project Father John Misty releases their first record Fear Fun on Sub Pop today. If you are a fan of this former Fleet Fox’s beautiful solo acoustic work, Fear Fun will no doubt please you with its expansion of Tillman’s sound and vibe. Today also marks the official US release of the long-awaited new Santigold record Master of My Make Believe. Album opener “Go!” features an appearance by Karen O, and the album is filled with all you would come to expect from Santigold’s rock/reggae/hip-hop crash course.

Also out today is the new Ramona Falls record Prophet, It All Starts With One by Ane Brun, as well as the haunting new Sea of Bees record Orangefarben. Finally, make sure to check out the new Reptar record Body Faucet and Patrick Watson’s Adventures in Your Own Backyard.
