If you’ve seen Chicago songwriter Andrew Bird perform over the past fifteen or so years, you might have seen how intricately can combines loops of guitar, violin, vocals and whistling (he’s in fact a champion whistler!). For his recent session live on KEXP last month, Andrew Bird stripped it down and performed “in the round” with he and Jeremy Ylvisaker on guitar and Alan Hampton on stand-up bass surrounding a single microphone as Martin Dosh (usually an electronics guy himself) tapped with wire brushes on drums. A tight group, the four musicians played an intimate yet heartfelt and exuberant set of songs from the new album, Break It Yourself (on Mom + Pop). Check out the videos here:
