Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “How Long Have You Known?” by DIIV (formerly Dive) from the 2012 album Oshin on Captured Tracks.
Dive, or now DIIV as the label has recently announced, is a spinoff from Beach Fossils, led by Zachary Cole Smith. With the backing of Smith Westerns drummer Colby Hewitt, Devin Ruben Perez, and longtime friend Andrew Bailey, the one-man outfit that originated out of Smith’s bedroom has graduated to a four-piece band and joins the ranks of Brooklyn’s rapidly blossoming indie scene and dousing the Web with anticipation for the Oshin, debuting in late June.
Today’s featured song, “How Long Have You Known?”, is a portal to the forthcoming album. On it, the mellowed out aquatic guitar licks intricately echo and weave between choruses. It doesn’t take long for you to get lost in the three-minute whirlpool and be smitten with Smith’s sing-whispering a simple question against the pop melody. “How Long Have you Known?” has its hooks in you from the first beats of the opening rhythm.
There’s still a lot to be seen from these guys, and you’ve got to hold your breath for tour dates to be announced in support of this release. You can check in on Captured Tracks tour page for updates. In the meantime, watch the video for “Sometime,’ the first single off of Oshin.
