Call it musical gumbo. On each of their albums, Galactic‘s dizzying blend of funk, jazz, rock, zydeco, R&B, and hip hop flavored with an array of Latin and African styles simmers to a boil and encapsulates the true spirit of New Orleans. And just as cultures intermingle in their sound, so do tradition and innovation, creating a style that is both deeply rooted and far reaching. On their most recent release, Carnivale Electricos, Galactic celebrates the Mardi Gras, from New Orleans to Brazil, with a hedonistic parade of dance happy numbers, featuring a variety of NOLA musicians and vocalists, like Mystikal, Mannie Fresh, and Neville brothers Cyril and Ivan. Last month, live in the KEXP studio, the five-member group brought Living Colour’s Corey Glover -- consider it a lagniappe -- to provide vocals on three of the songs.
