This Friday, KEXP celebrates Ballard as the winners of the 2011 Hood to Hood Challenge. On Ballard Day, we’ll be taking over Bergen Place Park from 10am to 6am with a live broadcasts and with five local bands performing. That night, KEXP sponsors a series of showcases and our DJs spin at Ballard area clubs. One of the evening events you do not want to miss is the benefit for the Ballard Food Bank, where The Morning Show’s John Richards will host. Why don’t you want to miss it? Besides the fact that John always throws together a great mix of tunes, this will be an early opportunity for you to catch River Giant, a Seattle band destined for greatness. At one moment the trio of Kyle Jacobson (guitars/vocals), Liam O’Connor (drums/vocals), and Trent Schriener (bass/vocals) call to mind Ballardy folksters like Fleet Foxes and The Maldives, and at the next they wail like grunge rockers of old. To give a taste their new material and get people excited (rightly so!) for their show on Friday, River Giant performed live on the Morning Show last week. Watch the videos now and come by the Ballard Food Bank on Friday at 8PM ($5 donation suggested) to see them for yourself.
