Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “The Only Place” by Best Coast from the 2012 album The Only Place on Mexican Summer.
Formed in 2009 in Los Angeles, Best Coast aims to emulate all that SoCal has to offer, sun, summer and the great Pacific – so much that they become synonymous with it on Jeopardy! Succeeding Crazy for You, the sophomore release attempts to grow up a little – just a little. Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno still head the operation, with Cosentino in charge of lyrics, songwriting, vocals and rhythm guitar while Bruno tackles lead guitar, bass, and drums. While the two up the ante in their writing and performing, the enlist revered producer Jon Brion to help elevate The Only Place further and make it really shine. You can really hear the enhance production on today’s featured song, the title track, as Cosentino’s vocals pop out of the fuzzed out guitar riffs. Still, a bit of the lo-fi treatment they’re known for remains, reminiscent of 90’s surf girl band Tiger Trap, as she relates a sentiment devoted to the simple things, like going to the beach and hanging out near the ocean. “Why would you live anywhere else?” she croons. Hard to argue with that.
Best Coast is currently on tour with JEFF the Brotherhood or Those Darlins, depending on where you’re seeing them. They’ll be at the Neptune next week, on May 22nd, when they will also be LIVE ON KEXP (1PM PST). Then, they’ll be hitting up the rest of the U.S. and U.K. throughout the summer. Check out their website for details and other fun updates. For now, here’s their 2009 single, “When I’m with You,” performed live for KEXP at the Gibson showroom in Austin during SXSW 2010:
