It’s time again for Friday on My Mind, the weekly collaboration between KEXP and King 5 News where we take a look at videos centered around one subject. Today we’re talking about Musical Twins.
During the first half of June, all babies born at this time are in the sign of Gemini. Some of the characteristics that Geminis are known for include having a dual personality, being able to see both sides of an issue, as well as being known for distracting themselves from what is most important, and the sign is represented by the image of the twin. A few famous twins you may be familiar with include Bee Gees Robin and Maurice Gibb, Full House stars Mary Kate and Ashley Olson, and Gunner and Mathew Nelson of the rocktastic 80′s musical duo Nelson. Besides those twins there have been many KEXP friendly bands that have included twins as members. Here are a few of our favorites:
The Breeders - Divine Hammer
Originally formed as a side project of Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly while their bands Pixies and Throwing Muses were touring together. Although Kim played bass in Pixies, for Breeders, she played lead guitar and sang lead, while Kim’s twin sister Kelley was signed onto the band to take on backing vocals and additional guitar duties. “Divine Hammer” was the follow up single off of their album Last Splash and the follow up single to the wildly successful song “Cannonball”.
Tegan And Sara - Alligator
Tegan and Sara Quin are singing identical twins from Calgary, Canada . The twins have toured with the likes of Neil Young, The Pretenders, and Death Cab for Cutie. They are currently in the studio working on their next studio album.
The Proclaimers - I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Although they had been putting out music since the late 80’s, the Scottish twin brother duo of Craig and Charlie Reid shot to prominence when their song, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” was used in the 1993 movie, Benny & Joon. Although they’ve not had the same level of success since, they continue to create music and released a new album in early May.
The National - Abel
KEXP favorites The National features twin guitarists, Aaron and Bryce Dessner.
Doves - Snowden
Twins Andy and Jez Williams formed Doves out of the ashes of their former band Sub Sub. Both brothers contribute vocals. Andy plays drums, while Jez takes on guitar duties.
Gene Loves Jezebel - The Motion of Love
Holy Hair! UK band Gene Loves Jezebel featured identical twins Michael and Jay Aston.
