Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday, we present a song by a Northwest artist. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Secret Song” by Blooper from their 2012 self-released album, Go Away.
Go Away is local band Blooper’s second release and is the first to feature bassist Darrin Ruder and drummer Chris Quirk alongside singer/guitarist Adriano Santi, who started the project last June with the release of the Ballard Avenue EP. The opening track on Go Away, “Secret Song,” is a dextrous exercise in lo-fi pop songwriting that wouldn’t sound out of place on the first Best Coast album. Despite being recorded during January’s weeklong snowstorm in Seattle, a sun-baked crispness seeps through the trio’s instruments. Blooper’s mix of garage-rock raggedness and bright pop songwriting that’s endearing and exhilarating all at once.
The band doesn’t have any shows booked at the moment, but they’ve said to expect them back in mid-August. Wait for an announcement on any future shows and releases over at their Bandcamp and Facebook pages. In the meantime, watch a video for their song “Not My Style” here:
