“I think I’m getting old,” remarks singer-pianist Sam Coomes of Quasi after a frenetic performance of their one of their songs, “but that’s not really strange, that’s normal.” Quasi have been around for nearly two decades, but the Portland duo are just as energetic as they’ve ever been. Along with drummer/singer Janet Weiss (Wild Flag, ex-Sleater-Kinney, ex-Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks), Coomes wails across simple but effective piano lines and Weiss’ now trademark loose/aggressive drumming. It’s a weird combination on paper, but endearingly effective in practice. Watch video of the duo’s stop at KEXP from February below, which includes a new song, “The Goat”:
