It’s been a big year for rapper and producer El-P. Producing not one, but two critically acclaimed rap albums, the Brooklyn hip-hop veteran is back, and his signature in-your-face beats are as abrasive as ever. His most recent album Cancer 4 Cure, released on May 28 through Fat Possum Records, is his first since the end of his own Definitive Jux label in 2010, and is being hailed by fans and critics alike as one of the best hip-hop records of the year. Known for his fast, corrosive flow and his loud, chaotic beats, El-P is a rapper who understands that good hip-hop doesn’t have to sound clean to sound great.
Appearing with him on Sunday night at Neumos is Atlanta rapper Killer Mike. Killer Mike, who’s recorded with Outkast’s Big Boi, released his album R.A.P. Music in May as well. R.A.P. Music was produced by El-P, whose driving beats provide the perfect backdrop for Killer Mike’s brutal style. But don’t let his image overshadow his abilities. Killer Mike is one of hip-hop’s most thoughtful rappers, using his songs to address a variety of political and social issues, though he does also makes videos where he attacks people with an axe.
Catch El-P performing with Killer Mike, as well as Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire and Despot as part of their “Into the Wild” tour Sunday, July 1st at Neumos. More information as well as tickets are available here. If you can’t make it to the show, be sure to tune in to KEXP for an in-studio session with El-P and Killer Mike Sunday at 8:00. In the meantime, check out El-P’s “Works Every Time” from Cancer 4 Cure, featuring Zola Jesus, as performed live on Conan below:
