Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday, we present a song by a Northwestern artist. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Two More Minutes,” a self-released 2012 single by Seattle’s Jaymes McFarland.
Singer-songwriter Jaymes McFarland has been releasing original music through YouTube for about a year now, but he’s only recently begun to pick up steam in a live setting through gigs around Seattle. Out of the twelve original tunes he’s released, one has stood out above the rest. Laid-back and seamless, “Two More Minutes” is a smooth introduction to Jaymes McFarland. Carried by wobbling bass and sparse, downtempo beats, McFarland’s bright voice soars across the track, crooning to his lover that “in all the days in between/you’re still my drug of choice.” Recalling traces of Justin Timberlake and the xx, the track is a crystalline soundtrack to a late summer night driving along the shoreline. Jaymes McFarland’s next gig is at the Hard Rock Cafe on July 27th. You can keep track of him on Facebook and Twitter, and keep an eye out for new music on his Youtube channel.
