Live Review: Passion Pit with 2 Chainz @ Emerald City Trapeze Arts 6/27

Yep, you read that right. Rising hip hop star 2 Chainz and synth-pop geniuses Passion Pit played back to back Thursday night at a trapeze place in south Seattle. This show was one of seven secret shows across the country put on by The Fader and Vitamin Water where a hip hop act and an indie rock band play back to back. Past shows have included Santigold and Wale in Chicago, as well as Zola Jesus and The-Dream in L.A. The acts were only allowed to leak information to fans a couple days in advance, as the Fader and Vitamin Water kept the acts a secret on their website. Best part was, if you put all the pieces together and RSVP’d, then the show (and the drinks) were free! And for a free concert, Thursday night was a whole lot of fun.

DJ100proof got everyone pumped for the evening as people piled in. The venue only had room for 500 and those that got there late were turned away. But inside, Emerald City Trapeze had been decked out for a great show, with VIP spots on the second level and standing area packed all the way up against a small stage at the far end. As 2 Chainz emerged, the crowd went wild as he burned through tracks off of his assorted mixtapes including T.R.U. REALigion and Codeine Cowboy. “No Lie” had everyone singing and bouncing along. He also spun a handful of the tracks by other artists that he was featured on, including Nicki Minaj song “Beez In The Trap”.

As Passion Pit came on, the crowd went nuts. Michael Angelakos waved and smiled at the crowd as the band started in on “Moths Wings”. This time around, the Passion Pit live setup felt much more rock driven than his albums. But the adaptions were well received by the crowd and sounded incredible. New single “Take A Walk” had the whole crowd singing along. Angelakos pulled two other new songs from upcoming album Gossamer including the spastic “I’ll Be Alright”. The other, called “Constant Conversations”, was the most R&B track Angelakos has ever written, and it sounded fantastic. For the other six tracks, the band stuck to the classics. “Better Things” and “The Reeling” were met with raucous dancing, and every voice in the venue sang along to “To Kingdom Come” and “Sleepyhead”. Angelakos even pulled out a driving new version of “Smile Upon Me” that had long time fans losing their minds. Angelakos bid goodnight to the audience and closed with “Little Secrets” with full crowd participation.

The Fader/Vitamin Water Uncapped show in Portland is on July 11. If you are willing to make the drive, keep your eyes open for who pops up on the roster. So far, every one has been stellar! Finally, make sure to check out Passion Pit’s new record Gossamer, out on July 24!
