It’s time again for Friday on My Mind, our weekly blog post where we stop to watch videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. For this week’s edition, we will be looking at the worst songs from Sylvester Stallone film soundtracks.
So you may be saying to yourself, “Wow, this week’s topic is pretty left field and random.” While at first glance it may seem that way, there is method to the madness. Today, July 6th, the one and only Sylvester Stallone celebrates his 66th birthday. And as we’re all still recovering from the patriotism and excitement of the 4th of July, we all know that you can’t really get anymore American than Sylvester Stallone flicks. So we’re taking this opportunity to indulge ourselves in the guilty pleasure of heckling a few of the terrifically terrible songs that have graced the soundtracks of Stallone’s films. Rocky, Rambo, arm wrestling, Sammy Hagar -- they all scream America to me and what better way to say Happy Birthday to Sly. So without further delay, sit back and witness song and video choices that are so bad, that they are awesomely bad. Here are the worst songs from Sylvester Stallone film soundtracks...
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
Wow. I don’t know about you, but if I saw these dudes walking towards me on a dark street, I’d run. The feathered hair alone is enough to make me want to scream.
James Brown - Living in America
Featured in Rocky IV, this song played a major role during the scene in which Apollo Creed goes into the boxing ring for what turns out to be his final bout with Ivan Drago. Don’t get us wrong. As much as we love and respect for James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, this was not one of his better moments.
Sammy Hagar - Winner Takes it All
From the movie Over the Top, which if you missed this gem from 1987, it follows the struggles of Lincoln Hawk, a semi truck driver played by Stallone, who travels the country with his estranged son while competing in arm wrestling tournaments around the country. Awesome. Even more awesome is this song and video from the movie. Check out amazing footage of Sammy on a motorcycle through the Vegas strip or barefoot Sammy shredding on a guitar. Awesome.
