Friday on My Mind: Songs About the Sun

It’s time again for Friday on My Mind. Our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. This week the sun has remained with Seattle for more than a few consecutive days, so in honor of this momentous occasion, today we’re looking at songs about the Sun.

Earlier this week on the Morning Show I dedicated an entire show to the sun! Let’s face it- the sun is not something we Seattleites get to see that much of during the year and no one appreciates the sun like Seattle does. Way back when, people believed that the sun was a fireball created by the gods. Years later scientists believe that it was a fireball created by the big bang that was probably created by the gods. Okay maybe not “the gods”, but not sure anyone knows what really happened. What we do know is that without the sun we would not exist. It’s probably obvious why, but in case you didn’t know, without the sun, there would not be enough heat and warmth for us to sustain and all humans would freeze and DIE. HOWEVER, we wouldn’t be aware of what was happening for a whopping 8 whole minutes because that is the amount of time it takes for the light to get here. The sun is actually half way through its life and has only 5 billion years left to exist, but in about 1 billion years it will be 10% brighter and suck the water right off of the earth, which would definitely kill us all. So really we only have a billion years to figure out our survival plan, although I’d be impressed if we were all still here in 100 years. Societies have been based on the sun, religions have worshiped the sun, many symbols and icons have been influenced by the sun so you can imagine how many songs have been written through the years. Not a lot of those songs are by Seattle residents though. The sun is never out long enough here in order for people to get their pen to paper. Here’s a few of our favorites:

Caribou - Sun

The Animals - House of the Rising Sun

The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon

Honorable Mentions:

Maps - Don’t Fear

TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun

Yeasayer - Sunrise (Live on KEXP from NYC)

Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
