Live Video: Cedric Watson

Who says tradition is dead or lost on today’s youth? Lafayette, Louisiana’s Cedric Watson doesn’t just wear the trappings of the older generations. His sound bubbles up from the bayous and swamps of the region. While his peers were listening to hip-hop and rock, the Texas-raised musician, still in his 20’s, immersed himself in the songs of the zydeco masters, learning the techniques of the Creoles and Cajans, and quickly mastered both fiddle and accordion. It’s particularly the spirit of Creole that interests him, as it’s a melting pot of ethnicity, nationality and genre… something new that grows out of the colonized lands across the world. As you’ll hear in his interview with The Roadhouse’s Greg Vandy during his recent session on KEXP, the four-time Grammy-nominated performer is as fluent in history and culture as he is in the sounds of the past. Scholar, artist, ambassador — Cedric Watson proves that an old sound just needs a fresh attitude to be compelling to any listener. Listen and watch this vibrant performance now:
