Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Gun Has No Trigger” by Dirty Projectors from the 2012 album Swing Lo Magellan on Domino.
The first single from Swing Lo Magellan, the band’s sixth album, “Gun Has No Trigger” is a triumphant return for the Brooklyn collective. Although leader Dave Longstreth is notorious for his love of complexity, “Trigger” features a (relatively) simple arrangement. Built on a crisp drum pattern from Brian McOmber and a steady bass groove courtesy of secret-weapon Nat Baldwin, “Gun Has No Trigger” provides a platform for all three of the band’s vocalists (Bitte Orca show-stealer Angel Deradoorian is on “hiatus” from the band) to show off their chops. Leader Dave Longstreth leads the charge, bringing more intensity and urgency with every line as he progresses through each verse. He’s backed up by the haunting coos of Haley Dekle and Amber Coffman who follow his every move until all three voices erupt in chaotic, Projectoresque harmony. A showcase for Longstreth’s arrangements as much as it is for the band’s vocal power trio, “Gun Has No Trigger” is not only a great beginning to the band’s new, personal approach, it’s also a great starting point for those uninitiated with Longstreth and company.
Swing Lo Magellan is out now, and it’s picking up some great reviews. You can find out more about them at their website or Facebook page. If you’re interested in seeing the well-oiled machine that is their live show, they’ll be playing tunes from the new album at Showbox at the Market with Wye Oak on Monday, July 23rd. Until then, watch the Longstreth-directed clip for “Gun Has No Trigger” below.
