It’s time again for Friday on My Mind where we look at videos centered around one common topic. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and KING 5 News. For this week, we’re talking about Capitol Hill Block Party.
Summer in Seattle means the music festivals are in high gear, and the Pacific Northwest has some of the best music gatherings in the country. One of the best of the best takes place right in the heart of one of the most creative and happening areas in our city, the Capitol Hill Block Party. Taking place this year from Friday July 20th-Sunday July 22nd, the Block Party is now 16 years old. It was founded in 1997 and has since expanded to a 3 day festival with six stages. The festival has been home to some of the best up and coming local and national bands for years and it’s a great atmosphere to experience live music both indoors and outdoors. KEXP will be broadcasting from the Block Party again this year, which has become part of the festival’s tradition. We will be LIVE from Barboza on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Every year the festival does different and creative things to shake it up. This year will include free Saturday morning Bikram yoga at the main stage, after hours performances at Neumos as curated by the Decibel Festival, which is another great Seattle music festival taking place later this year, as well as children’s programming that will take place on Sunday morning before the gates officially open. This free family event will be taking place at the Neumos stage from 9am-11:30am, which will include a performance from Casper Babypants, and there will also be free ice cream and lemonade for everyone. The music lineup this year is another stellar group of both established and up and comers. Here are some of the best acts performing:
Fitz & the Tantrums – MoneyGrabber (Live on KEXP Nov. 2010)
Fitz will be live on KEXP from the Block Party on KEXP as well, 5:30pm on Friday. They are ALWAYS amazing live. This band was a KEXP discovery years ago and the band is always happy to collaborate with the station in order to show their love. This is one of many live performances they’ve given to KEXP listeners, this one from the Triple Door.
Neko Case – This Tornado Loves you (performed on David Letterman in 2009)
Neko continues to be one of the best and brightest stars performing today. With ties to the Northwest, she has been on KEXP and been a part of various benefits for us over the years. Here she is performing on Letterman a few years back.
The Lumineers – Ho Hey (Live on KEXP)
The Lumineers are yet another band KEXP championed early on in the game and are returning to the Block Party for the second year in a row although THIS year the entire world knows who they are. Here’s footage of their performance during the Morning Show when they stopped by KEXP earlier this year.
My Goodness – In the Sun (Live from the Mural Aug. 2011)
They’ll rock your face off.
