If you’ve been following KEXP for a while, you’ve noticed how excited we are every year by Icelandic music. You may have also seen the many videos that KEXP captures every year in Reykjavik during the Iceland Airwaves festival, like when we discovered Of Monsters and Men back in 2010, and many others even before that, like Sudden Weather Change, For a Minor Reflection, Mugison, Ólafur Arnalds, and Mammút. The Airwaves festival itself just keeps getting better and better. This year, a stellar international roster, including Dirty Projectors, Phantogram, Purity Ring, and The Vaccines join Icelanders Sigur Ros, Of Monsters and Men, FM Belfast, Sóley, and many, many others.
While the lineup is pretty much finalized (there still may be a few more surprises to be announced), new bands still have the opportunity be part of the festival through Reyka Vodka’s “Breakthrough at Airwaves” contest. Two bands will be selected by the festival and win a weeklong trip to Reykjavik including travel and lodging, plus a spot in the festival’s lineup. Just like last year’s winners: YACHT, Caged Animals and Young Magic.
Bands have until August 1st to submit one original track, photos and a biography/website to the official Reyka Vodka website. The winning bands will be announced on August 14th.
Good luck! We hope to see you there!
