Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Dirty Money” by Antibalas from the 2012 self-titled album on Daptone Records.
Brooklyn-based 12-piece Antibalas is back with the lead song from their brand new album, appropriately entitled, it seems, Antibalas. The new self-titled album is their fifth album, released a full five years after their last creation, Security. The band kicked around a couple different titles, but they all agreed on Antibalas. “We’re always who we have been, and this is what we are and what we’re about, without any frills. If you’ve never heard any of our albums before, this is the one to listen to.” Seems like a good enough endorsement from us, and if Afrobeat is even remotely your type of thing, there are few that do it better than Antibalas. Recorded over a two-week period at Daptone’s House of Soul Studios in Brooklyn, this is their first full-length to be released on Daptone, which given Antibalas’ long-running ties to artists on the label (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Menahan Street Band and The Budos Band), should have happened much sooner. “Dirty Money,” the opening track on the new record, showcases the Afrobeat style and horn driven percussion that this band does so perfectly. It’s also a nice little nod to Wall Street that appears to be awfully relevant right now. This is a band that clearly knows what they want to do, while still taking stock of their roots and what they’ve already done.
Antibalas is playing select shows over the next few days and will begin a tour of the Southeast next month before heading to Europe. Hopefully, a West Coast tour will follow, but no such dates are scheduled yet. Keep your eyes peeled, though, by following the band on Facebook as well as their website. For now, here’s the official video for today’s featured song:
