Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Time” by Blonds from their 2012 self-release, The Bad Ones.
For a band of only two people, Blonds (not to be confused with Blondes) have an impressively sweeping sound. This is a pretty common feature of most dream-pop outfits, large enthralling sounds from one or two people at most, but what sets Blonds apart from most of these bedroom artists is Jordy Asher’s hauntingly charming production and Cari Rae’s simple and down to earth vocals that don’t pretend to be anything they’re not. After the success of their 2011 EP, Dark Roots, the romantically involved duo relocated to NYC to record their first full-length Bad Ones, which was released earlier this month to critical acclaim. “Time,” the second single off the album, features plenty of driving drums and soaring synths while Rae coos affectionately “Time is on our side/everything’s alright.”
Blonds have only a few shows listed in the Northeast for now, starting at The Rock Shop in Brooklyn on August 28th. You can find out more information on their Bandcamp and Facebook pages, and be sure to check out their album, streaming over at Soundcloud here. For now, here’s their video for “Run”:
