At first a side project and now a full time gig, Battleme began as a secondary outlet for Matt Drenik, frontman of hard rocking Austin band Lions. Despite its aggressive sounding name, Battleme displays Drenik’s softer writing style, one more prone to be supporting Band of Horses as Lions was for Monster Magnet. While Lions remains on hiatus, Battleme has located to Portland, where Drenik set up a studio and recorded some 40 songs or so. 11 have made it on the self-titled debut, released by fellow Austinite and KEXP favorite Thomas Turner of Ghostland Observatory and his label, Trashy Moped. No rootsy sleepers, Battleme songs vary from the devil-may-care slow burn of “Killer High” to the boot stomping groove of “Shoot the Noise, Man” and “Closer.” Recently, Matt Drenik brought these songs to the KEXP studio to perform live on the Morning Show with John Richards.
