Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday, we present a song from a Northwest artist. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters is “My Love is Real” by Divine Fits from the 2012 album A Thing Called Divine Fits on Merge.
So, what happens when you mesh the swagger of Spoon and the synth-heavy frenetic energy of Handsome Furs? Apparently, A Thing Called Divine Fits, the collaboration of Britt Daniel of Spoon, Dan Boeckner of Handsome Furs and Wolf Parade, and Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks. Modestly referred to as an indie-supergroup, implied indulgence, serendipitous union — call it whatever you will — together the members of Divine Fits will satisfy fans mourning Handsome Furs’ recent dissolution and give Spoon fans with a little extra to care about.
The first single, “My Love Is Real,” is an energetic intro to the album, building from sharp electronic claps and bouncy synths to carry Boeckner’s pleading vocals. The song, at first, recalls Handsome Furs’ dancey rhythms until you feel the spare atmospherics Britt Daniel toyed with on Spoon’s last album and the playful metal drum Sam Brown taps throughout. It’s Daniel’s and Brown’s influence that keep the song lean. There’s been a great deal of anticipation, and a fun series of trailers, for the project, and today’s song, with it’s instantly catchy hook prove that A Thing Called Divine Fits is not just a derivative mash-up of already successful artists, but something to get excited about.
Clear your schedule, they will be performing at the Crocodile tonight with Black Whales followed by only of handful more shows around the U.S. They’ll be stopping by KEXP on the morning after their concert, on Friday at 11AM, to share new songs live on air. Tune in tomorrow and look for the rest of their tour dates and more information on their webpage. For now, check out one of their trailers for the album just released this week:
