Live Video: El-P, Killer Mike, Mr. Mf’n eXquire, and Despot

When Queens’ Despot, Brooklyn’s Mr. Mf’n eXquire, Atlanta’s Killer Mike, and Brooklyn’s El-P (and all of their supplementary musicians) stopped by Street Sounds back in July, it was clear that the quartet’s performance would not only be one of the KEXP studio’s most crowded performances that month, but also one of the most thrilling. The relative newcomers, Despot and Mr Mf’n eXquire, held their own against the spotlight of 2012’s most acclaimed hip-hop pair, and one by one, the MCs passed the mic around the room, spitting their verses with precision and passion. Despite the stacked bill of alternative hip-hop icons and newcomers, no artist ever steals the spotlight from another, and the result is a session that captures the feel of Golden Age-era posses who paved the way for these four artists.
