This Friday, two heroes of the dance punk rite will be putting on quite a party at Paramount Theatre, and you are crazy if you don’t want to be there. Don’t believe us? Read on.
Portland weirdos YACHT couldn’t be a more appropriate opener for Hot Chip. Both bands once shared label space on DFA, and they both appropriately can fall under the dance punk moniker. But even if some folks present aren’t super into YACHT, they’ll at least wake everyone up and freak them out. YACHT’s newest release Shangri-La is not only one of the danciest albums of 2011. It’s also one of the few excellent dystopian concepts albums of the last couple years. No, really. Shangri-La is pretty much about dancing at the end of the world. What’s scary is that like most great dystopian stories, much of what YACHT discusses is visible in the world around us today. But you know, if you aren’t really into lyrics, you can still dance your ass off to their ridiculously awesome tunes.
Hot Chip has been blowing our minds for over ten years at this point. Between the band’s 5 LPs and countless singles, Hot Chip has controlled a unique dance floor, where club-goers and introverts alike can dance to songs that make you jump and shout as well as speculate on the meaning of life. Their new record In Our Heads is perhaps the best example of this so far in their career. It hosts “Night & Day”, easily one of Hot Chip’s all time catchiest tunes ever. But it also has tunes like “How Do You Do It” and “Look At Where We Are” that highlight the importance of true relationship and what it means to love one another. In Our Heads is reason enough to buy tickets to this show on the spot, but judging by recent setlists, for this tour, Hot Chip will be incorporating plenty of crowd pleasers into the mix as well. Prevalent on the lists are tunes from 2010’s One Life Stand and 2007’s most excellent Made In The Dark. Just think: “Shake A Fist”, “Night & Day”, “Over and Over”, and “I Feel Better” all in one setlist? That’s a good time.
You can still grab tickets for this show online or at the automated Paramount Box Office open 24/7 (it’s right outside Paramount). Also, you can hear a stripped down session with Hot Chip this Friday live on KEXP at 1PM! Tune in and see you there!
