If you’re looking for proof that electronic music isn’t just “techno” and that it actually covers a vast range of sounds, from the most beautiful and tranquil neo-classical compositions to the most bombarding, overwhelmingly awesome club beats, Seattle’s annual Decibel Festival is exhibit A. And you don’t need much more proof than that if you fully delve into this year’s amazing line-up that’s gracing venues all over Seattle from September 26th to September 30th.
This is my 5th year curating a “Spotlight on Decibel Festival” podcast for KEXP’s Music That Matters series and with each passing year it gets both more exciting and more difficult. How to realistically translate five epic days worth of music performed by 160+ artists in a single podcast? While I’ll encourage you to go to Decibel Festival’s website for complete information and to hear clips of many of the artists playing this year, I’m proud of this 90-minute podcast and feel it will definitely give you a taste of what to expect from this year’s line-up!
I’m always excited to see local producers included amongst the international roster and this year’s line-up boasts a small army of talented Pacific Northwest artists. On this podcast you’ll hear Seattle-based artists Keyboard Kid, Kid Smpl, IG88, Katie Kate and DJAO, as well as PDX’s Natasha Kmeto and Gulls.
Elsewhere in the mix you’ll hear the propulsive, anthemic dancefloor beats of Moscow-based DJ/producer and 2012 breakout act Nina Kraviz as well as veteran, influential UK duo and dB Festival headliners Orbital, retro/futuristic funk from Stones Throw artists DaM-FunK and The Stepkids, transcendent ethereal pieces from Anenon, Julianna Barwick, CFCF, Nils Frahm, and Dalot, in addition to cutting-edge rhythms from artists on the Friends of Friends label like Shlohmo, Salva, and Groundislava (featuring fellow LA-based artist and Decibel Festival performer Baths).
There’s even MORE to check out on this year’s “Spotlight on Decibel Festival 2012,” so I encourage you to download the podcast to get an appetizer of this year’s massive line-up and truly bear witness to the breadth of contemporary electronic music that will be on display at this year’s Decibel Festival.
