Thursday Music News

  • While traveling in Texas as part of her tour behind this year’s The Idler Wheel..., Fiona Apple has been arrested for hash possession. (Let the flood of “Free Fiona” and “Criminal” jokes commence.) Apple is currently being held in a Hudspeth County jail, but is still scheduled to play The Moody Theatre tonight as part of Austin City Limits. Check out Fiona’s mugshot over at Pitchfork.
  • Canadian twins Tegan and Sara have been steadily working on their seventh studio album for a few years now, and now it has a tentative release window (early 2013) and a first single. A far cry from “Back In Your Head” or “Walking With A Ghost” “Closer” is a glossed-over tune that boasts an arena sized chorus, which will probably serve them well when they play arenas later this year while opening for the Killers. Listen to “Closer” below:

  • The xx may be busy touring behind their recently released sophomore album Coexist, but the London trio found time yesterday to perform an original composition with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. You can listen to the performance here and watch performances of songs from Coexist live at KEXP over here.
  • Despite releasing both an album and a short film in the last three months, Dirty Projectors are prepping to release even more new music in the form of an EP in November. About To Die features the titular track alongside three new cuts on both 12″ vinyl and digital formats on November 6th. As if that wasn’t enough, they’ve released a video for “About To Die” that draws from their short film Hi Custodian to go along with the EP. Watch it below and see the tracklisting for About To Die over at Consequence of Sound.

  • During a tour stop in Columbia, Maryland, bearded tour buddies Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket teamed up for a cover of The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah”. For some reason, there were also toddlers onstage, but then again, MMJ frontman Jim James wears a cape onstage, so maybe it’s not that surprising after all. Watch a fan video of the head-scratching moment below.

Speaking of Band of Horses, their new album Mirage Rock is amazing. I’ve been streaming it on their website all week. http://www.bandofhorses.com
