OPTICAL 5: Undercurrent is just what the doctor ordered for the tired minds of Decibel goers. The Sunday, September 30th, showcase features three Kranky Records artists: ambient geniuses Windy & Carl from Dearborn, MI, who started releasing music in 1992, as well as Christina Vantzou, who will have already done visuals for several showcases at this point, and Loscil, the moniker of Canandian musician Scott Morgan. Visual displays + ambient classical scores = yes please, after four days of bouncing pounding screaming EDM.
Loscil means “looping oscillator,” which apparently is a function of Csound, and don’t ask me what that means. But the words seem perfect for music as distant and swelling as the ambiance that Loscil makes. His albums have moved through elements over the years, from the earth, the water, and the sky, and have produced sound effects that sneak up on you. It’s the kind of music you don’t realize you are listening to, and then all of the sudden you realize how beautiful the noises actually are.
Many musicians with classic training find themselves making music that is seemingly only remotely connected – pop music or metal or something equally as lacking in apparent depth. But Christiana Vantzou didn’t – she studied classic music and is now a composer as well as a visual artist – creating vivid neoclassic electronic scores. She will be performing her No 1 at the OPTICAl showcase, the album that gained her attention in 2011. Which should really be all you need to know – an ambient album that captured mainstream attention.
Windy & Carl don’t tour very often these days, they opened a record store in Dearborn, MI, where they (I imagine) sell records to people who have no clue about their notoriety or the many albums they’ve released since 1992. Their album titles give you an idea about their sound: Consiousness, Depths, The Dream House. Starting with ambient sounds, their music progressed towards a film score – and at the Optical showcase, you will see them along with audio visuals.
Optical 5: Undercurrent will be at The Triple Door on Sunday, September 30th, starting at 5:30PM. The show will end by 9:00PM. Get more information here.
