Dinosaur Jr.‘s J. Mascis is known primarily for two things: being an alt-rock legend who helped characterize and develop an entire culture of music and being notoriously laconic and lethargic. In a nutshell, he’s a slacker guitar god. As such, it was no real surprise that the band showed up for an afternoon set at this year’s MFNW without having prepared a set list, turning their show instead into an all-request performance and any Dinosaur Jr. fan’s dream. Without playing any song written in the past 20 years, the band tore through an absolutely amazing set, reminding the packed packed Doug Fir Lounge what it’s like to witness a true legend at work.
