While they do have some excellent competition, smart money is on Alt-J for the Mercury Prize win. Past winners have been respected veterans (PJ Harvey, Portishead, Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, etc.), but these relative upstarts from Leeds have undoubtedly made one of KEXP listeners’ and DJs’ best album of the year. Their awesome debut, An Awesome Wave, is a forward thinking, multi-genre blend of Brit rock, Afro pop, and electronica — jokingly referred to by the group as “folkstep” — and artists like My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek have not only taken note but have remixed some of the Alt-J’s songs. Amazing, considering their album came out in the U.S. only just a few weeks ago. Right now, thousands of new fans are discovering a new favorite as they tour with labelmates Grouplove from one sold out venue to the next. Before their full capacity show at the Moore Theatre last month, Alt-J performed a full set at the Triple Door as part of KEXP’s VIP Club Concert series. KEXP donating members got to attend this exclusive session live, but now you too can ride the awesome wave on our videos, including the full 40+ minute set, here:
