Live Video: Debo Band at Bumbershoot Music Lounge

Debo Band was without a doubt the largest band performing at the Bumbershoot Music Lounge last month, and it’s likely that their 11 members crowding the tiny stage made one of the biggest sounds of the entire weekend. Led by saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and vocalist Bruck Tesfaye, what started as a practice band in Boston has quickly become one of the most unique artists on Sub Pop Records. Their music, filled to the brim with countless influes spanning continents and decades, is a continuous surprise, colliding soulful saxophone solos with Amharic vocals and entangled rhythms until sound stumbles out in a way that’s almost as impossible to pin down as it is to ignore.
