Seattle band Hey Marseilles formed in 2006 when vocalist Nick Ward and guitarist Matt Bishop met at the University of Washington, and since then they have been gaining well deserved praise ever since their 2008 full length release, To Travels and Trunks. Their following 2011 single, “Elegy,” has also been critically hailed, and the band has achieved the reputation of putting on soaring and dynamic live shows. Being self-described as “folkestral,” Hey Marseilles features more instruments than their already impressive seven members, creating pop magic with unconventional and traditional instrumentation, including glockenspiel, ukulele, guitar, cello, viola, accordion, piano, bass, mandolin, and an assortment of percussion instruments.
Kicking off the second day of KEXP’s broadcast live at the CMJ Union @ Union Square Ballroom during 2012 CMJ Music Marathon, Hey Marseilles set the bar high with an elegiac set, featuring “Elegy” and b-side “Cafe Lights” plus a couple of new songs, “Dead of Night” and “Heartbeats.” It’s going to be a busy season for Hey Marseilles. Right after CMJ, the head back out on the road, continuing their national tour supporting Sea Wolf. Look for them back in Seattle soon with more new material!
