Live Video: Ásgeir Trausti

This week, we are featuring all Icelandic artists for our Song of the Day podcasts, in anticipation of our broadcast next week at KEX Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves, and first up was the young singer-songwriter Ásgeir Trausti. You can read more about him here, but the takeaway points are that the 20-year old Trausti – son of a poet and brother to another well-known local musician – is a relative newcomer to music yet has managed to top local sales charts with his recent debut; that American songwriter John Grant, now living in Reykjavik, plans to translate the album’s Icelandic lyrics; and that while his music sounds a lot like a mashup of Bon Iver and James Blake, Ásgeir Trausti is a huge Nirvana fan, so much so that on his first day in Seattle, he and his bandmate, Julius Róbertsson, took a cab out to Cobain’s former residence on Lake Washington, snapped a few photos and then walked back to downtown (it’s quite a distance). Regardless of the influences or the Icelandic lyrics, listeners from anywhere will find Ásgeir Trausti’s music hauntingly beautiful. That’s why we invited him all the way here from Iceland earlier this month to join our third annual Reykjavik Calling showcase at Neumos. And just before that, we had him perform live in the KEXP studio. Watch the videos here now:
