Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Labrador” by Aimee Mann from the 2012 album Charmer on SuperEgo Records.
On her eighth LP, Charmer, witty singer-songwriter Aimee Mann explores the dark sides of charming people. Social climbers and narcissists abound, and Mann’s character often finds herself the victim of their tricks. Just watch as a robotic doppelgänger nearly steals her career in the music video for the album’s title track. And if you enjoyed Mann’s performance as Fred Armisen’s and Carrie Brownstein’s deadpan housekeeper on Portlandia, you’re sure to enjoy the video for “Labrador” (below), which parodies her former band ‘Til Tuesday’s video for “Voices Carry.” Mann’s fictional boyfriend is just as demanding as he was in the 80s, but this time, he’s encouraging her to grow a rat-tail. It’s an off-beat but fitting complement to a song about letting the people you love treat you like a dog.
Mann postponed her Manhattan and Brooklyn shows this week due to Hurricane Sandy, but tickets from both events will be honored at her performance at the Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight. Check out her website for more upcoming tour dates.
