  • Although there were some other things going on last night, NME released an excerpt of a new interview with My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields where he revealed not only that the band’s long-gestating third LP is due by the end of 2012, but also that he’s prepping a subsequent EP of new material, and that they’ll debut some new music at a Japanese gig in May. “Some people think it’s stranger than Loveless. I don’t”, said Shields of the new album, who may actually follow through on the promise he made five years ago.
  • Sufjan Stevens took a break from getting ready for Christmas this week to post a cover of “The Star Spangled Banner”, just in time for the election. Stevens’ version may not culminate in an enflamed guitar (like a certain other artist who covered the tune), but it does have enough trumpets to stretch the song past the five-minute mark. Listen to it below, and hope that Stevens somehow gets a chance to perform this in the next inauguration ceremony.

  • Radiohead have some crazy fans, but it’s unlikely that many of them have $50k to pony up for the Oxford band’s early cassette demos, which are now being sold on eBay. There have been 17 offers so far, but no one has matched the asking price that Extremely Rare Records is proposing. The four cassettes comprise the then-named On A Friday’ earliest recordings, and if you buy internationally, you still have to pay for shipping. What a let down.
  • Cat Power’s 2012 has been filled with ups (releasing her [excellent] first album of original songs in six years) and downs (canceling a Coachella appearance, being diagnosed with angioedema.) Although she was worried she would have to cancel her November/December European tour, she now has simply postponed it to 2013. Read Chan Marshall’s full message, including some comments on her health, on her Instagram post.
