Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday we feature a song by a Northwest artist. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “I’m Gonna Try” by The Maldives from the 2012 album Muscle for the Wing on Spark and Shine Records.
“Who are you?” The Maldives implore on “I’m Gonna Try,” the opening track on their new LP. Not many albums begin with questions, but then again, The Maldives aren’t just any band. Though they only have two albums under their belts, these six Seattlites are fixtures on the festival scene, having played the Capitol Hill Block Party, Bumbershoot, and Sasquatch. Following the success of 2009’s Listen to My Thunder, The Maldives have teamed up with The Head and the Heart producer Shawn Simmons to craft Muscle for the Wing, an impressive, impassioned collection of alt-country tracks. “I’m gonna try to find what’s mine,” lead singer Jason Dodson declares. It seems like he already has.
The Maldives are scheduled to play a handful of West Coast dates in the next month, including the Moondoggies/Maldives Annual Holiday Show at the Tractor Tavern. Check their Facebook page for additional tour dates, and watch them perform “I’m Gonna Try” with Icelandic singer songwriter Lay Low:
