Live Video: DIIV at CMJ

It was the longest wait of the KEXP broadcast at CMJ. As we were midway through hosting a dozen bands at Union Square Ballroom during the 2012 CMJ Music Marathon, on Thursday afternoon a packed house stood eagerly waiting for DIIV to come on. Missing drumsticks were the culprit, but once new ones were acquired, the once bedroom project of (Zachary) Cole Smith, roared into action. Your typical shoegazing rock, it wasn’t. On stage, the band flailed about. Amid glimmering pop melodies and trippy psychedelic riffs, Cole Smith channeled one of his heroes, Kurt Cobain, with wailing intensity (he even slipped a few lines of “All Apologies” into the song “Air Conditioning”), making for one of the most captivating performances of the festival. No waiting required - watch the full performance for yourself now:
