You might be thinking, haven’t I seen Cold Specks videos on the KEXP blog before? Recently, in fact, Canadian singer-songwriter Al Spx, a.k.a. Cold Specks, performed a haunting set live on KEXP with just her voice and a guitar. The paired down versions of her songs resonated well beyond their minimal presentation, so we could only imagine what an amazing impact the full-band version of her self-described “doom soul” would make. Just a few months later, accompanied by bass and drums as well as cello and bass clarinet, Cold Specks returned to KEXP to perform her single, “Blank Maps,” once again (compare the difference!) and three other songs from her stunning debut, I Predict A Graceful Expulsion.
