Live Video: Paul Banks at CMJ

Paul Banks rose to prominence as the singer/guitarist of Interpol in the early 2000s, and on October 22 of this year, Matador released his third record as a solo artist. While Banks is Banks’ second full-length, it’s his first under his real name, as he seems to have put the Julian Plenti moniker to rest after his EP Julian Plenti Lives… was released in June. Not lost is Banks’ distinctive baritone and some of the liquid guitar lines that serve as the only real reminders of Interpol. As a solo artist, he’s able to try things he wouldn’t if not on his own. Paul Banks reportedly worked on these songs with laptop and headphones while touring with Interpol over the last two years, and the result is a characteristically dark, moody album that burns with a kind of late-night electricity. In the mid-afternoon of KEXP’s broadcast from CMJ Union @ Union Square Ballroom during the 2012 CMJ Music Marathon, Paul Banks and his backing band brought that dark energy, with a somewhat looser groove, to thrill the packed house.
