Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday … in recent years the post-Thanksgiving calendar has started to look like a short list of working titles for aborted New Order songs. But there’s more to the season than just shopping. The holidays are a time we think of others, too. And starting today, #GivingTuesday aims to inspire you to do just that, by designating the Tuesday following Thanksgiving as a day for philanthropy.
The #GivingTuesday concept is simple: kick-off the year-end season of giving by showing your support for worthwhile causes today. Take some of the money you saved over the weekend and make a donation to a non-profit that’s close to your heart—or your ears. Like all non-profits, KEXP depends on your generosity to power music that matters. KEXP’s Year-End Campaign started yesterday, and your gift of support on #GivingTuesday will help keep the music strong by contributing to the 2012 fundraising goal.
Your #GivingTuesday support can have a profound impact on the lives of others, as Sarah from Lake City reminded us a few days ago: “On a particularly uninspiring morning, I flipped to KEXP on the car radio.” John Richards was in the thick of his annual “Remembrance Day” show, honoring the memory of his mother and her fight with cancer.
“In the half hour that I waited on the Stewart ramp, listening to letters about loved ones lost or fighting [illness], mixed with the best damn music, I was renewed. I have so many gifts bestowed upon me and KEXP is just one of them. I wanted to do something to help ensure John’s ability to do this show every year. Thanks for changing my day.”
You’re passionate about music, too. That’s why you tune into KEXP. And when you support KEXP on #GivingTuesday, you’ll be bestowing the gift of music that matters on friends and family all around the world, because your donation powers everything KEXP does: the broadcasts, podcasts, in-studio performances, exclusive videos, and live events in the KEXP Community around the world. That’s quite a value! And you didn’t even have to camp out on the sidewalk overnight to enjoy it.
#GivingTuesday is about taking action as well. Sign up to volunteer for a shift or two on KEXP.ORG—the hours you donate help keep our operating costs low and allow KEXP to invest more money in the music and services you love. And take a moment to let people know you’re supporting KEXP on #GivingTuesday, too. Just like you pay close attention when a buddy raves about a new band or favorite restaurant, your friends are curious about the organizations you endorse. When you post a status update on Facebook or strike up a conversation around the water cooler about KEXP and #GivingTuesday today, you’ll be doing another good deed: leading by example and strengthening the KEXP Community.
