On one of the videos we posted for Icelandic reggae band Ojba Rasta, someone wrote, “What’s next, Icelandic bluegrass?” Well... yes. Sort of. Copenhagen based duo My bubba & Mi is at its core two young women -- My, from Sweden, and Bubba, from Iceland -- whose music hails more from the Appalachian mountains than the Nordic fjords. But while their charming rusticism, acoustic instrumentation like banjo, guitar and table harp, and even their classic long dresses are quaintly appealing, their general folksiness belies a modern savvy that gives it all an edge. My bubba & Mi’s stage shows, like their pre-broadcast performance for KEXP at KEX Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves, are full of bawdy humor and innuendo. Watch and listen as they add a risqué cover of Peaches’ “Fuck the Pain Away” to a set filled with traditional song inspired originals and quirky pop jingles.
