Out This Week 12/4

This week’s list of new releases is short but sweet. You’ll find enough new music out today to make your trip to your favorite record store a rewarding venture. One of the most interesting new releases, but probably not the best holiday gift for even most music listeners, is a mind-bending sonic collage from 60′s popstar turned uncompromising yet highly influential experimental artist Scott Walker. Out today, Bish Bosch is now available to eager fans awaiting the followup to his equally challenging though much darker 2006 album, The Drift. The nearly indescribable Bish Bosch features among its nine songs a twenty minute track, “SDSS1416 + 13B (Zercon, A Flagpole Sitter),” which manages to tie together the lives of an historical 5th Century Moorish jester with an actual dwarf star. The album is full of head scratching references and sonic fragments that will confound and delight. Less challenging but still quite rewarding is the third album by Dayve Hawk, a.k.a. Memory Tapes, which our Music Director, Don Yates, calls the third album “a fine set of hazy electro-pop with a wistful, atmospheric sound combining bright, buzzing synths, sleek guitars and dance-friendly rhythms.” You’ll also find the CD release of A Wrenched Virile Lore, a collection of remixes of tracks from Mogwai‘s critically acclaimed album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, featuring Zombi, The Soft Moon, Tim Hecker and others. And a Joanna Newsom collaborator/arranger and his partner, Ryan Francesconi & Mirabai Peart, draw inspiration for a gorgeous new instrumental album from a recent trip they took to the Greek island of Lesvos.
