Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Awkward” by San Cisco from the 2012 EP Awkward on Fat Possum Records.
Oh, high school relationships. Remember all the missed voicemail messages and mixed signals? Remember how uncomfortable you felt when you saw your crush on a date with someone else? Okay, maybe adults have the same problems, and that’s why San Cisco’s “Awkward,” with lyrics by teenage vocalist Jordi Davieson, is getting so much good press. Though their name might lead to believe otherwise, this band of schoolmates hails from Fremantle, Western Australia, and they’ve already found quite a following in their home country. After being “unearthed” by Australian radio station Triple J in December 2010, the band released their debut EP, Golden Revolver, full of energetic pop tunes reminiscent of The Kooks and Vampire Weekend, and made their first tour of the summer festival circuit. Now, following Golden Revolver, “Awkward,” plus four other songs, can be found on the group’s latest EP of the same name, releaesed in the U.S. by Fat Possum. Soon enough, their debut full-length will be available here, but for now, it can be found only in Australia, where the band is currently touring. Keep an eye open for more new music and for an upcoming U.S. tour in 2013 by visiting their Facebook page regularly. For now, watch the video for “Awkward” below:
