Live Video: Jherek Bischoff

We certainly see a variety of music in our live studios at KEXP, but it’s rare that we get an orchestra and composer. Granted, Jherek Bischoff isn’t your typical composer, arranger and performer. The Seattle-based artist, who got his start in indie rock bands, recorded his solo debut, Composed, an album years in the making, one instrument at a time, often traveling around town by bicycle with his laptop and a microphone. The resulting cohesive, orchestral album is made even more amazing with additional contributions by artists like David Byrne, Caetano Veloso, Mirah, Carla Bozulich and others. Over the past year, Bischoff has been traveling and performing with Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra, arranging for her and performing his own music, but it wasn’t until his first headlining show at the Moore Theatre just over a week ago, that he’d even heard some of his songs in a full orchestra/theatre setting. In fact, many of the performers who appeared on the album had never met before that night! It was a special moment (read about it here), made even more special for KEXP listeners as Jherek Bischoff brought a stripped down version of the more than 20 member group to the KEXP studio as a preview two days before. Joined by six members, including his own brother on drums, Bischoff led the group while conducting and performing on ukulele and bass, and singing “Blossom” and the normally David Byrne-voxed “Eyes” from the album. After an untitled instrumental, he introduced Seattle singer Tomo Nakayama of Grand Hallway to step in for Craig Wedren (Shudder To Think) on the ethereal “Your Ghost.”
