Nu-disco god Andy Butler and his Hercules and Love Affair project have been blowing our minds for years now. With the self-titled, Butler cultivated a disco masterpiece, full of slow burn and tainted love that needed to be danced to. Then, with last year’s excellent Blue Songs, he moved in a slightly more house driven direction and gave us club bangers one after another. So now, it’s only right that Butler gets to join the list of great DJs on the already phenomenal DJ-Kicks roster. And naturally, on his contribution, Butler holds no punches back. His set, complete with the new Hercules and Love Affair single “Release Me”, may be the only party mix you ever need to buy again.
As can be expected, Butler pulls from new and old house and disco to create the ultimate culmination of Hercules and Love Affair’s universe. Expect a whole lot of four-to-the-floor bass and ride cymbals and hi hats coming out your ears, because this is 70 minutes of disco inferno and it’s not trying to be anything else. One might argue that the party can only last so long before it gets tiresome here. But the list of exclusives doesn’t end with “Release Me” - several of the tunes here are Butler’s own new takes, including the excellent addition of Ha-ze Factory cut “A Bit of Redemption”.
Butler has built quite the disco masterpiece with his DJ-Kicks set and it is a fantastic addition to this stellar series. You can grab the set on iTunes or in high quality on the DJ-Kicks website. The CD version is available in stores now with the same tracklist. The vinyl version is shipping shortly, with a shorter tracklist, focusing more heavily on the exclusive tracks. Enjoy!
