CHVRCHES

  • Chvrches have a lovely roller rink video for their song “Now is Not The Time.” Where previous roller rink videos might focus on the retro dress or mad tricks, Chvrches instead lets the lights play while skaters circle like ghosts and their synth pop song sweetly fills the cavernous space. You can also hear their KEXP studio session here. [Stereogum]

  • Today a whole slew of punk covers of classic songs were announced for Record Store Day 2013 - you’ll be able to pick up the vinyl then. First off we have Ty Segall returns to Record Store day with a follow up to his 2011 covers this year for Ty Rex 2 he’s given us a woozy and gnarly cover of “The Motivator” as well as “Cat Black (The Wizard’s Hat)”. Next we have the punk boys of The Black Lips with a cover of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings“Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys” - it’s surprisingly serious for the group, whose mama’s probably wishes (at some point in time) they had even considered being doctors or lawyers. The other half of that Black Lips 7-inch is Icky Blossoms cover of Siouxie and The Banshees’ “Arabian Nights.” Be sure to go grab copies on April 20th.

  • There have been rumors flying every which way since BBC6 host stand in Peter Serafinowicz mentioned that Boards of Canada might have a new album - and it has finally be announced today. Almost 7 years after their last release The Campfire Headphase - Quetzalcoatl will be a double album released later in the year. You can get the full track listing over at FACT, and I don’t think I’m spoiling anything when I let you know the second disc’s songs are all untitled.
  • For unknowable reasons Vampire Weekend and Steve Buscemi not only walked together in the NYC easter Parade, but Buscemi also did a lovely little cover of Vampire Weekend’s “Diane Young.” The video is pretty quiet, in fact Buscemi seems rather hemmed into a large crowd and not exactly totally into the completely acapella rendition. But then again neither do the boys of VW. Not sure what this accomplishes, but I guess they are each fans of each other? [Stereogum]

  • In other worlds of covers we have Anika with her upcoming EP that’s full of covers - including this creeping, almost menacing cover of “Love Buzz” - which was also famously covered by Nirvana. “Don’t you hear my love buzz?” She asks - and the fact is you barely can through the wandering humming and buzzing of bass and synths. [Stereogum]

  • Seattle’s punk trio Naomi Punk stopped by Newton Radio in NYC during their recent tour - and now you can watch the sweltering fuzz filled session. They performed “Television Man” as well as “The Spell” and “Burned Body” - even though it’s just a video you can feel the heaviness of how loud they are. Check it out below. [Impose]

  • Thom Yorke stopped by Alec Baldwin’s WNYC podcast “Here’s The Thing“. Baldwin could make the iTunes terms and conditions sound hilarious so it’s no surprise that his podcast is thoroughly entertaining. They covered topics ranging from politics to Yorke’s great grandmother and, of course, the Radiohead/Atoms for Peace rocker’s amazing music career. [Vulture]

  • Los Angeles native 90s band Medicine are releasing their first album in 18 years this summer (out August 6 via Captured Tracks). To the Happy Few features the original members including Brad Laner, Beth Thompson, and Jim Goodall. To refresh your memory of the band’s trademark shoegaze sound, here is their first single “Long As The Sun”. [CoS]
